Hi Im Johnny MacAulay  and this is the latest incarnation of my website. Im trying to collate material that Ive been working on for the last   30 years , as a musician ,clown performing in circus, rock concert circuit, festivals, nightclubs and the street. As it covers over three decades of work it will be split into  two distinct areas, pre and post lockdown.The Pre lockdown part describes my work as a performer the post lockdown section displays my present position as a painter.They are both important blocks of my artistic development .​​​​​​​​​​ I have a collection of scars showing that I cut my teeth and passed my apprenticeships.However upon the arrival of  Lock down  ( remember that ?? ) I went from doing around 300 shows a year to none. It was time to make some changes in direction. Just before lock down I had been injured , performing a straight jacket escape on London's Southbank. One of my volunteers in the this family street show, knocked me off my feet whilst tied up  and I landed on my head , which caused me two years anxious insomnia. The writing was on the wall ,or should I say blood on the pavement and I took up painting in my convalescence. I painted everyday, all day . Starting with watercolours and progressing to oIl on canvas , ( but id  say watercolour is far more difficult)Id always messed around with drawing , comics for my own entertainment, but as i had the time to concentrate I actually stared making some technical progress. However it wasn't until I started taking some lessons from Anastasia Pollard and travelling to other artists workshops  that I made that technical leap in portraiture and figurative painting.​
